This was taken in 1877. It’s been burned into my consciousness for years ever since seeing it. There were many cases of cannibalism and he feared someone would try to kill and eat his children or wife.
These are individuals and families, who slowly faced the despair of knowing they had no food and would have no food in the near future. They faced the horror of knowing there was nothing they could do to save their life or that of their children.
When she made any sound or did anything he didn’t like, he’d growl and bare his teeth at her like a dog.
Her whereabouts today are unknown. Mean as puff pastry right? Well that’s what I thought.
She padded over to the shopkeeper and made a fuss of him and greeted the police with a waggy tail and friendly sniffs.
I was in school when it happened, and classes were pretty much cancelled as everyone was glued to the TVS watching the news unfold. So I headed home, it was only a two minute walk. When I walked in the door i could hear CNN blaring and my mother was on the couch glued to the TV.
Than the camera zoomed in.
“Oh my God….”
It wasn’t debris…
Than another
Another
And another
And another..
The last two appeared to be holding hands as they were tumbling in the air together.
This made the entire tragedy very real, and very human to me.
To the camera operators credit, he panned out for a wide shot of the tower before the first one hit the ground.
Bad enough that everyone agreed to it…
They looked at each other one last time
One by one, they took one last deep breath, ran and launched themselves out the window.
